Our team draws from diverse backgrounds, languages, and professions, coming together towards a common goal of empowering and building leadership for Congolese women.

Julie Kabukanyi

Julie is a Registered Nurse, and President and co-founder of CAWEL. Originally from Kinshasa, Congo, she immigrated to the USA in 1991. She has a Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Lubumbashi, a Bachelor of Sciences in Nursing from Salem State University, a Masters in International Relations and a Graduate Certificate in Gender, Leadership and Public Policy from the University of Massachusetts, Boston. She is currently pursuing a Family Nurse Practitioner Degree at Regis College. A Congolese native, she is passionate about the empowerment of Congolese women and girls through education and health promotion.

Xia Zhang

Xia is a professional writer and co-founder of CAWEL. She studied at Columbia University and Rutgers and graduate Sum Cum Laude in 2019. At CAWEL, Xia oversees fundraising, event coordination, outreach and program development.
